One room, that was all they had left. One room, with one bed. I shouldn’t have expected much from a place that was fine with us checking in at five a.m. and paying by the hour. It was a small place called the Wagon Wheel Inn that was an odd mix of adobe motel rooms, teepees people could sleep in, and actual covered wagons as decor. The one room was one of the adobe ones, built in a long thin line with the others, which meant mercifully it wasn’t a teepee. It had odd shag carpet and puke colored flowers on the scratchy comforters. There were pioneer pictures bolted to the wall, and a baby blue lamp sat next to the bed. I would never dare to turn a black light on in the room.

God almighty, someone up there had a sense of humor. It was probably my mom, and that simple thought made my heart hurt.

“Why here?” I asked when I flipped on the lamp and the filament actually hummed. “There was a Hilton back by the highway.”

“They’ll look there first if they’re on to us,” Niall said as he set my haul from the gas station on the enamel dresser next to the TV. “And I doubt seriously this place has cameras.”

“Ahhh.” I nodded as I looked around again. “Perfect place to dispose of a body.”

“No, hotel rooms are a fucking bitch,” he said casually.

“Don’t.” My word barely made it out. “My mom?”

His brow darkened then he turned to lock the deadbolt and hook the chain on the door. “Do you really want to know?”

I swallowed and shook my head. I didn’t. Nothing he could say would make it better. Even if she had some giant, ornate gravestone at a church and the few friends she’d made had stood there mourning the loss of her, I couldn’t. Specially not now.

“Yes.” I didn’t want to know but I needed to.

“I didn’t kill her. Mac just called and said he had a body and it needed to go into a foundation being poured in Elmhurst. I couldn’t do it,” Niall said softly. “I was supposed to do the usual but I couldn’t.”

“What did you do?” My voice shook but it was nothing compared to my hand and my heart.

“I called in a favor and had her cremated then went at sunrise and spread her ashes at Montrose beach and out on the point.”

How I had more tears to cry, I wasn’t sure, but they spilled out and I hid my face in my hands.

“I’m so sorry, Drea. I figured someone would contact you.” He gathered me up in his arms and this time I didn’t fight him, I just wrapped my arms around him and let the puddle of water spread beneath my cheek. “I would have swallowed my ego for that,” he murmured, his face buried in my hair. “For you.”

I just nodded. Split between love and hate and hurt, I didn’t know what else to do.

He pulled back the comforter on the bed then drew me down with him.
