CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Mark
Arlene’s call and decision to let Markeesa go with us made me consider the possibility that maybe she wasn’t behind the drama, after all.
It was a fleeting thought because if Arlene wasn’t behind the antics, that meant we had suddenly become the unluckiest people on earth.
However, during that phone call, there hadn’t been a single cross word between us, no bickering, no fighting, and that was strange enough.
For a change, when Arlene talked to me, her tone was calm and gentle, like it used to be back in the day. In the beginning, Arlene was sweet and compassionate. That kindness she showed me left me in a state of confusion. Back then, Zaneda seemed more interested in globe-trotting with her friends than taking care of her family, and Arlene was the opposite; she was there. She was different. She didn’t mind doing anything she thought might make me happy. I loved that about her.
I loved my wife, but back then, Zaneda acted like we were nothing more than roommates. With Arlene’s constant attention and meticulous care for the kids and me, I started to feel like there might have been something real between us. She was everything a wife should’ve been. Unfortunately, one thing led to another, I crossed the line, and got caught up.
At a time when I was ignored by my wife, sex with Arlene was everything it wasn’t with Zaneda. It didn’t matter what I wanted her to do, she’d do it. She never complained, and was always willing to please.
By the time I found out that she was pregnant, my marriage was completely on the rocks. Zaneda had been out doing her own thing and I found evidence that those trips with her girlfriends weren’t as innocent as she claimed. It became the fuel that fed my infidelity.
I moved out and our family was in complete shambles. Regardless of how vicious the fights became with Zaneda and me, Arlene was there with comforting words.
“She doesn’t deserve you,” Arlene would say.
“A man like you needs someone who knows how to take care of her husband,” she would remind me.
Everything she whispered in my ear seemed to make sense. I knew there were hundreds of women who would’ve jumped at the chance to take Zaneda’s place. But I didn’t have to look far. Arlene was capable and willing.
After arguments with Zaneda, Arlene helped ease my frustration and let me know that once the baby was born, we could be the kind of family I never had with Zaneda. The great thing about Arlene was, she loved the boys, so to her, taking care of us all, was already a given.
As I tried to figure out what to do about the marriage and Zaneda, Arlene and her mother completely took over. The house was clean and quiet, hot dinners were always on the table, and it looked like Arlene and I were headed for a solid future together.
But I didn’t move fast enough for her. She wanted Zaneda to know about us and about the baby.
