Chapter 14

And there the four of us stood—Thorne, Leopold, me and Leopold’s wife. At least I assumed that was her.

A heavy blanket of tension fell on us. The woman on Leopold’s arm unlinked her hand from his elbow and reached for Thorne.

She smiled widely, her green eyes glittering with warmth. “Thorne,” she cooed, wrapping her arms around him. “You are such a sight for sore eyes.”

Thorne seemed to melt in her arms. The stiffness that had sunk into him disappeared. The great beast that he normally was dissolved, and in its place was the Thorne I had grown to care for.

“Isabella,” he said. “I never thought I’d see you again.”

“And I, you,” she said. “If it wasn’t for your father, I’d invite you over every day.”

My eyes cut to Leopold, who stiffened. He was broad shouldered like Thorne but with more delicate facial features. He had an air of confidence and authority about him that only vampires possessed.

It made sense. They were such powerful creatures that few things intimidated or scared them.

But when Thorne spoke of Leopold, I imagined an older man with salt-and-pepper hair, maybe a beard. Not a smooth-faced man with eyes that betrayed a cleverness and a secret that would probably never be revealed.

No, this was not the man I’d envisioned, but it was the man I received.

“Oh, thank goodness,” Rose said from the doorway. “I thought y’all would never arrive.”

She trotted outside and took one look at Leopold, pinning his shoulders between her hands. “You look just about as handsome as I expected. You must be starving from traveling as far as you did. I have no idea exactly how far that was, but I know it wasn’t close.”

She pulled him toward the door. “I’ve got blood sausage and anything else you could want. Please, come in.”

I gestured to Rose. “This is Rose, my great-aunt. She’s very excited about your visit.”

Rose took one look at Isabella and gasped. “And if you aren’t the most beautiful creature aside from myself when I was your age, I don’t know who is.”

I hid a chuckle behind my hand. “This is Isabella.”

Rose grabbed her, too. “Well come on, all of y’all. You too, Thorne. I’ve got a big breakfast feast to welcome you.”

Thorne shook his head. “I have work to do.” He said it stiffly, and I knew the wedge that had broken him and Leopold apart was still strong as ever.

Part of me had hoped father and son would see each other and decide their anger wasn’t warranted. And Thorne might feel that way, but Leopold was the one calling the shots, and until he extended his hand to Thorne, there would be no reconciliation.

Thorne’s gaze raked over me. A hint of frustration and a fraction of something that I could only describe as betrayal shone in his eyes.

I cringed. My heart constricted, and guilt washed through me. I felt so bad. I really did, but at the same time I needed answers and Leopold was offering to help.

Surely this was a sign that good things might happen between Thorne and his father.
