CHAPTER SEVEN

“Hi,” I reply. My voice sounds breathy and girlish, but I can’t help it.

He continues to stare at me for a moment, and then he gestures to the curtained doorway with his hand. I take the cue and walk out to the sitting area and bar with him following me. He directs me to the bar by simply moving in that direction, and he motions for me to sit on one of the stools. He doesn’t sit beside me, though; he remains standing as he captures the attention of one of the dirndl-adorned barmaids.

I don’t even know what he’s ordered for me and, frankly, I couldn’t care less. When it comes, I drink it unknowingly. I’m completely caught up in him, and the adrenaline from the auction is finally descending to make way for the adrenaline from being with Jameson. There isn’t that immediate level of comfort and friendly intimacy that there had been with Esteban. In fact, the vibe coming off of Jameson is rather cold and aloof. I’m not even offended by that, though, because he wouldn’t have paid $300,000 for me if he didn’t want me. In a strange way, his off-putting demeanor makes me want to be with him even more, almost like wanting what I can’t have.

“So, June said you’re a CEO?” I ask awkwardly. I’m not sure what to say to this Adonis of a man.

“Yes,” he replies. For one horrible second, I think that he’s just going to leave it at that and we’re going to sit in uncomfortable silence. He doesn’t, though. “At Sterling International. I believe she mentioned that as well.”

“She did,” I murmur. Not wanting to lose the flow of conversation, I hurriedly continue. “So, what is Sterling International?”

He starts to explain a little bit about his company, but I’m distracted. I feel eyes on me, much in the way that I can feel Jameson’s when he’s staring, but they’re malevolent and angry. I dart my gaze over Jameson’s shoulder for just a second, and I see Esteban across the room. Harlan is beside him, who I hadn’t even noticed before, but they aren’t talking. Esteban is glaring right at me, and he looks like the personification of fury. I flick my eyes back to Jameson just in time to hear his question.

“Do you deal with that at all as a corporate lawyer?”

I hesitate. I hadn’t heard what he’d been talking about, but I’m not sure that I want to confess to that, so I opt for the vague response.

“I deal with a little bit of everything. Dennings sends me around the country for the entire gamut of corporate law. I come to New York most, though.”

He accepts the response, either because I sell it well or because he hadn’t really cared about the answer when he’d asked the question. I try to remain engaged and ignore Esteban as he asks me a few more things about Dennings and my travel. Then, bluntly, he asks, “Are you ready to go?”

“Oh, sure,” I say, slipping off of my stool and reaching for my clutch.
