Portuguese shipbuilders developed the caravel. It was sturdy enough to sail in rough seas and had a large hold to carry cargo.

The growth of international trade changed society from the 1700s. It led to the growth of what became known as capitalism. The change was made possible by an agricultural revolution that had taken place in the middle of the 1700s. The use of new mechanized farming equipment led to the final collapse of the feudal system.

GROWTH OF THE WORLD ECONOMY

The emergence of capitalism and the later Industrial Revolution led to rapid industrial growth. These estimates give the total of gross world product in the equivalent of billions of dollars.
