Key points

•Leading-by-example (captured in sequential public good games) has been put forward in the literature as a mechanism that could regulate self-interested behaviour.

•The literature produces mixed evidence on the effects of leadership. What seems to matter most for groups to be successful in achieving cooperation is whether the leader sets a good example of being cooperative as conditional cooperation is a key motive in this setting.

•How a leader is appointed matters: group outcomes are more efficient with democratically elected leaders (through voting) compared to randomly selected leaders.

•Contribution suggestions made by elected human leaders have more positive effects on behaviour than when made by computerized leaders.

•Leaders with specific characteristics are better able to promote the greater good for their group. Such characteristics include leaders with higher status, leaders who make decisions in a transparent social environment, and leaders with cooperative attitudes.
