Chapter 14

Matteo

“This would be easier if you all helped instead of laughing at me.” His arms were stretched across a large snowball that he was trying to roll up the side of an even larger snowball to form a snowman. He had it halfway there but couldn’t seem to get a good grip to push it the rest of the way.

The trouble was, the thing was dashedly heavy and slippery to boot. His face was red with exertion, and his legs ached. If he wasn’t careful, he’d throw his back out.

It might be worth it to get out of the Christmas Eve ball, but not even an injury would keep his father from stuffing him into a tuxedo and pronouncing him engaged. No doubt Angelo would help Padre, the traitor.

His sisters and Avery stood several feet away, giggling over the absurd position he’d gotten himself into.

Still laughing, Avery came to his side. “I’d help, but I’m just not sure where to …” She approached his right side, but his leg and arm were in the way of her grabbing hold. She went around to the left and found the same problem. “Maybe if we …” She went behind him and leaned into his back, digging her feet into the deep snow. This, in turn, pushed his chest against the snowball and held it in place. “Better?”

In some ways, yes. The snowball stayed put. But with her body pressed to his, even with the layers and layers of clothing they wore to keep warm, Matteo was ultimately distracted from his goal. All he wanted to do was turn and take Avery in his arms. “Signorina, I find myself caught between a snowball and a beautiful woman. Was it your intent to trap me here?”

She giggled softly and lifted her chin to rest on his shoulder. “I’m not the kind of woman who has to trap a man.” Her breath was warm on his cheek and sent a thrill through him.

“I believe you’ve trapped many a heart in your day, signorina. Though you may not have been aware of it at the time.” She’d certainly laid snares for him today.

It had all started when she’d appeared wearing a stocking hat and two long braids—like a schoolgirl. Only, she was all woman in her fitted coat and tight pants. He liked a lady with curves, and she had them in all the right places. He found her a sweet concoction of innocence and seduction and instantly knew she was unaware of her own charms.

Her feminine traps had continued as she’d tromped through the gardens with his sisters, looking for the perfect spot to build their project. She’d held their mittened hands, listened to their lamentations over dance class the night before, and made a snow angel right beside them. Which was more than incredible, because his little sisters didn’t often have the opportunity to be children.

Avery’s time spent in their world made an impact on his heart—one he couldn’t ignore.

With the added leverage, Matteo found that he could drop his arms lower.
