Chapter Twelve

Megan rolled over in bed. It was still early morning and light filtered through the sheer curtains gently. The room Kenneth had given her was gorgeous, of course. The fabrics and bedding were luxuriously soft and looked brand new. Everything was mostly white, with a bamboo side table and picture frames and a few splashes of sea green accents. It was easy to imagine staying in bed half the day. But her mind wouldn’t be still.

Last night had started out comfortable, but that wasn’t how it had ended. After Kenneth stowed away the envelop, any conversation had been Megan’s doing. He’d been severely preoccupied. It had made Megan’s curiosity even harder to deal with. But somehow, she’d managed not to ask him directly about the envelope, even though he had to know how desperately she wanted him to talk about it. For some reason, he didn’t.

She slid out of bed and stood at the window. There was a blanket of fog across the yard, seeming to quiet the world. Growing up, she’d become accustomed to the foggy mornings of Seattle. Something about it made her miss her parents and she felt a new wave of guilt at the fact that they’d gone to Hawaii and she didn’t even know. What kind of daughter was she? But then, it would be easy to turn the tables around and ask what kind of parents would leave without talking to her?

She sighed, unlocking the screen and selecting their profile picture. It had been taken just a few years earlier and was very like them. Smiling and poised. They were always so picture perfect, but somehow it fit them. They tried very hard to be the kind, caring individuals they were seen as. Maybe it was why they couldn’t see anything wrong in Jarron. He put on the pretty face, but there was definitely a menacing side beneath. A sliver of forgiveness made its way into her heart and she realized she hadn’t fully given them a chance to understand her situation.

Pushing the call button, she held the phone to her ear and waited through a few dial tones. Her father answered in a cheery voice, very much like himself. She hinted to Hawaii and they were all apologies, her mother chiming in in the background. “It was your father’s idea,” she teased, both of them laughing the way vacationers do. Megan smiled. “It sounds wonderful. I’m glad you were able to get away. Do you need me to stop by the house? I’m in town for just a couple of days.”

“You are?” Her mom must have stolen the phone because her voice was the only one now. “Well, why didn’t you tell us? I’d love to spend the day with my daughter. We could go shopping and get ice cream, maybe stop by the bookstore.”

“Mom, that sounds wonderful but you don’t have to come back from Hawaii,” Megan laughed. “I have a car now so I can spend a weekend with you another time.
