Lizzie

“Okay, calm down.” Willow’s soft voice immediately soothes me, blaring from the speakers of my car as I drive home. “There has to be a reason he got so jealous.”

I let out a long exhale. “I don’t get it, Wil. I was on my way to slowly etching him out of my mind, and then bam! He draws me back in.” My turn signal clicks as I pull into my driveway.

“So, the real question is how are you feeling, babe? Are you willing to walk away from the feeling that’s been gnawing at you?”

“I’m not sure,” I say because I’m not. I put my car in park, lean my head on the steering wheel, and squeeze my eyes shut. My brain’s been in full-throttle mode, imagining us together—and not just sex. Despite how he’s been acting toward me, I know in my gut that we’re destined to be together, and I know he knows it too. But if he can’t admit it, I have to learn to break free from the hold he’s got on me, whether I want to or not.

“You still there?” Willow’s voice brings me back to the present.

“Yeah, I’m here.” I raise my head and slowly open my eyes.

“You need a glass of wine, a shitty Lifetime movie where the husband definitely did it, and a good night’s sleep.”

I huff out a little laugh. There’s a reason I always turn to Willow when I’m feeling off-kilter. As a social worker, she’s the most patient and gives the best advice—or maybe, just the advice I want to hear? Either way, she’s my girl.

“Text you tomorrow,” I say.

“Love you.”

“Love you, too.”
