'Thanks," he said, digging for some matches from his vest pocket.

She took them and went to the first man, rolled him over by pulling on his stiff arm. Diego made a sick moan as if pained when she snapped a match on fire with her thumbnail and held it close to the dead man's face.

"Know him?" Slocum asked, looking over her shoulder as she bent closer. Then the fight went out and the smell of sulphur filled his nostrils.

"Bustmente is that one over there's name. I think this one's name is Phillip."

"Where are they from?" Slocum asked, straightening.

"They work for him," Diego said.

"This gun buyer, Romo?"

"Yes, but if they are dead, where is he?" The short man searched around in the night.

"You have two options: He's dead and we ain't found him, or they took him away."

"Who took him?"

"Damn it, Diego. If I knew who it was who had him, why in the hell would I be asking you?"

"Oh, damn, Slocum, I don't know anything."

"Where does this Romo live?"

"I ain't certain."

"By damn, I'm sick and tired of your evasive answers. First, I never heard of this Victorio. Second, I think you're lying to me."

"All right, all right. The man who was supposed to be here is Omar Shard."

"You're saying that crooked bastard from Frio Grande is the one paying for the rifles?"

"I—I knew if I told you you'd be mad."

"Mad? That thief would sell his own grandmother into slavery."

"Easy, Slocum. This was an honest deal." Diego held out his hands to ward off any attack. "I promise you I never thought—"

"You never thought by teaming up with him. I trusted you
