Harriet Beecher Stowe and Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Always interested in writing, as well as social justice, Harriet Beecher Stowe published more than 30 books during her lifetime. From 1851 to 1852, she published Uncle Tom’s Cabin as magazine installments. They were so successful that she published them as a book. The main character of this book is Tom, an enslaved man characterized by his kindness, and Stowe used Tom to show readers the brutal reality of slavery through the eyes of a sympathetic protagonist.

The book sold more than 1.5 million copies in a year, and it helped many readers understand the evils of slavery. Stowe’s work is often credited with helping to strengthen the abolitionist movement in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln even met with her during the Civil War and commented that her book played a part in starting the conflict.

Harriet Beecher Stowe came from a very religious family.
