Farlost led me into the storage room, the door creaking softly as we stepped inside. The scent of aged wood and preservation herbs hung heavy in the air. Barrels and crates lined the shelves, casting long shadows in the dim light. As he turned to face me, his weathered face wore a grim expression.

“Jonathan, I’m sorry you witnessed that unpleasantness,” he said. His voice was low, barely above a whisper. “Those brutes come every month, demanding their money. I’ve been paying for over a year now, just to keep the inn safe.”

I clenched my jaw, my fingers curling into fists at my sides. The injustice of it all burned like a hot coal in my chest. “You’re not alone in this, are you?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

Farlost shook his head. His eyes darted around the room as if checking for unseen listeners. “No, nearly every business owner in Wealdcairn is trapped in the same net. Those who refuse to pay...” He trailed off, a shudder running through his body. “The consequences are dire. Grimfang’s thugs have no mercy.”

I paced the narrow confines of the storage room, my mind racing. The urge to confront Grimfang directly, to put an end to his reign of terror, was overwhelming. But this was something that would be made worse by brute force and direct confrontation if I didn’t have the firepower to back us up against the wolfkin that served him.

“There has to be a way to fight back,” I said. “We can’t let them continue to bleed the city dry.”

Farlost placed a firm hand on my shoulder. “I appreciate your fire, Jonathan, but you must be careful. Grimfang’s reach extends far beyond what you see. He has spies everywhere, always watching, always listening. One wrong move, and everything you hold dear could be lost.”

I met his gaze as the weight of his words settled heavily on my shoulders. As much as it pained me to admit it, he was right. We couldn’t afford to be reckless here. This was not a Dungeon with a straightforward Boss at the end.

“I understand, Farlost,” I said, my voice low and steady. “We’ll find a way to help, but we’ll be smart about it. You have my word.”

Farlost nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. “Thank you, Jonathan. We of Wealdcairn could use someone to champion our cause.” With that, he reached into his pouch. “You can stay free of charge from now on, my friend.”

I raised my hand. “Keep the Windcash, Farlost,” I said. “Those thugs shook you down, and you can use it.”

He gave me a grateful nod. “You’re a good man, Jonathan,” he said. “Thank you.”

We left the storage room and returned to the main area of the inn, where some of the merriment had already returned. I caught sight of Emlee, Laila, and Mackenzie waiting at our table.

Laila leaned forward as I took my seat, her blue eyes searching mine. “What did Farlost say?” she asked.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
