Garth got his horse moving again, the slow rhythm of the hooves a complete opposite to his racing thoughts.

Juliette Thompson, the woman he felt himself falling in love with, had been married to an old ranch friend. And old ranch friend who’d turned into a rodeo champion. A rodeo champion who beat his wife. His wife who was Juliette Thompson, who Garth wanted to spend a lot more time with—and maybe make his wife.

Garth felt like throwing up. He felt like racing back to Three Rivers, hopping on a plane, and flying straight to Montana so he could give Brad a taste of his own medicine. He recoiled from the vengeful thoughts. He wasn’t a violent person, and though Brad deserved a beating—and worse—Garth wouldn’t be the one to mete it out to him. God would take care of Brad, and Garth knew that punishment would be worse than anything he could do.

“Say something,” Juliette begged again. “I hate this silence.”

Truth was, Garth wasn’t sure what to say. How could he reassure her? What could he possibly tell her to help her?

“We’ll figure it out,” he said, not quite sure what he meant. “I’ll find out if he’s with someone else, if he’s divorced. If he is, that’s that.”

Juliette shook her head, sending a single tear flying. She wiped her face. “With Brad, nothing is ever over. He always said he’d kill me if I left him. I believe he still would, if he knew where I was.”

Everything fell into place all at once with a deafening clang inside Garth’s brain. “That’s why you broke things off in April. You found out I’d been friends with him.”

“Yes.” She sounded so small, so hurt.

Garth wanted to wrap his arms around her and protect her from everything and everyone. A new ache started in his chest, one that yearned to provide a refuge for her.

“I thought it too big of a risk for us to…you know. Have a relationship. I mean, you wouldn’t be able to post any pictures of us together.”

Frustration pooled beneath his tongue. “So why’d you kiss me last night?” He watched her, trying to get a read on her.

She fidgeted in her seat, held her reins too tight. “Because I wanted to. It felt so good to finally tell someone something real about myself, about who I really am.” She met his gaze with pleading in hers. “I don’t like that he’s still dictating my life. I like you, and I wanted to kiss you, and so I did.”

She liked him. She wanted to kiss him. New determination filled him. “We’ll figure everything out.” He reached for her hand again, beyond glad when she gave it to him to hold. He brought her knuckles to his lips and kissed them. “Okay? I’ll help you figure everything out.”
