CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
I wasnât quite sure what time it was. It was dark, or at least as dark as Vegas ever gets given the insane amount of neon lighting everywhere, but there were still plenty of people out. Again, this being Vegas, that likely didnât mean anything; there always seems to be people out and about in Vegas.
We zoomed out of the Dark Side and back into Vegas proper, blasting beyond the Strip. DJ kept giving directions even though Damian insisted he knew where he was going.
The transition was jarring. One minute we were in the middle of the city and the next we were in the suburbs, the ocean of concrete replaced with trees and patchy brown grass.
A moment later we arrived at DJâs neighborhood. Thankfully the gates were already open, otherwise I think DJ would have insisted we smash right through them. The transition from the regular street into the gated community was even more jarring than the crossover from the city to the suburbs. The houses were huge, large yards filled with tall palm trees and manicured green lawns.
We wove our way through the twisting streets, Damian now slowing a little. DJâs house was easy to pick out; it was where all the action was. There were several cars parked out front, two of them with flashing lights, though they didnât appear to be police cars but rather private security, and every light in the house was on.
DJ was out of the car before it even stopped, slipping right through the door and rushing toward the house, as far as he could get, anyway. He was, after all, tethered to the ring in Damianâs pocket.
The house was large, though not the largest in the neighborhood. If anything, it was modest compared to several of the others in the cul-de-sac. Even so, it was huge by my standards, Two-story. Off white. Mexican tile roofâwhich I love. The house itself was on a slight elevation and there was a winding stone walkway leading from the sidewalk to the front door. The connected garage look big enough to hold at least three cars.
Darlene was standing by the front door, talking to a short man in a brown suit and a security guard in a black and blue uniform. She was dressed in a short pink nightie that showed off her curves and left little to the imagination. She spotted Damian as soon as we got out and waved at him enthusiastically. The woman looked perkier than she had any right to be, especially given it was the middle of the night and Cthulhu had supposedly broken into her home.
DJ had stopped not far from the car, most likely because he couldnât go any further, but he now looked calmer, probably because he could see that Darlene appeared unharmed.
Darlene came running down the slope and embraced Damian in a tight hug. The man in the brown suit and the security guard followed.
âWhoâs that?â I asked, moving off to stand next to DJ.
âCarl Viggo,â DJ said, âmy second in command.
