CHAPTER SIX

HAD he crawled into bed with her? His hand rested on her waist and one leg was protectively across her thigh. Fearful of what she might find, Rikki lifted her head and looked over her shoulder. Dane was on top of the covers and fully clothed but, still, how had he wound up there? She hadn’t told him he could share the bed. Would he assume such an intimate notion? She savored the feel of him, just for a second, and almost dozed off again.

Under most circumstances she’d never agree to sleep with someone she hardly knew. But hadn’t she thrown herself at him a few days back? Considering the extraordinary circumstances that had cast them together, they’d become close very fast, both professionally and personally. But she’d made up her mind about keeping their relationship strictly professional. She really should do something about Dane sleeping beside her.

Soon.

An hour later, after she’d dozed off another time or two, she cleared her throat. He gave a deep, contented inhalation. She cleared her throat again. He stirred and stretched long muscular arms. One eye popped open. He went up on his elbow, looking as surprised as she felt. His gaze darted over her, around the room, and back to her face, as though trying to get his bearings.

“Um. You’re probably wondering how I got here,” he said, reading her mind. She’d never seen Dane look sheepish before.

She rolled away from his grasp, leaving enough room for his twins plus Brenden to crawl between them. Pulling the covers tight to her chin, she faced him. “As a matter of fact, I was.”

“You don’t remember me bringing your pain medicine last night?”

“No.” Was he fudging?

Recovering his composure, he yawned and rolled onto his back, folded his hands behind his head and stared at the ceiling. “You groaned like you were in a lot of pain, so I stuck around until you settled down. Only problem was I got comfortable on my favorite part of the bed.” He pointed to the opposite side of the king-sized bed. “Way over there.” He was now lying in the middle. “I guess I dozed off and must have migrated toward your warmth during the night.”

Her warmth?

He glanced at her with an apologetic twinkle in his sleepy eyes.

“I’d say I was sorry, but I’d be lying.” He gave a charming grin that would have knocked her socks off if she’d had any on. “This was so much better than sleeping on the couch.”

She pulled the covers tighter to her chin. Why had all her bravado disappeared? Hadn’t she been the one who’d requested a “sleepover” the other night at her apartment? But this was different—he’d actually slept in the same bed as her. And she’d just recently made up her mind about keeping whatever it was they had going on all business.

The implication slowly sunk in of the two of them lying together on his bed, and Rikki almost jumped off the mattress. She would have if she hadn’t been tucked in so tightly and her hips hadn’t still been tender.
