“Ummm . . . we ate at the restaurant downstairs. Then he walked me to the elevator. I came upstairs and noticed you all were busy. Then I entered my room. Drank some tea that a friend from the village gave me, which had a cleansing effect. I’ve been here all night dealing with that.”

“Can you verify that?”

“I suppose you can check the video from the hotel. Other than that, unfortunately, I can’t. I was alone. What happened to Thomas?”

My throat felt tight. The words felt forced. Other than my mother, he was probably the only other person I could say I had remote human feelings toward that didn’t revolve around lust and elation for killing. I stared at the detective, waiting to hear more about Thomas. Fear was a new concept for me.

“His grandmother found him. Face up, positioned as if on a cross, surrounded by rocks and dead crows.”

“Leave me her address so if we have further questions we will know how to find you.”

“Okay.”

I took the pen and paper he handed to me, and I wrote down the information. I knew I would have to mention his death to Obi. He left when he got the information, but he didn’t head downstairs. He went to the room he had been in when investigating the first murder. Close to me, allowed for easy surveillance. It was a smart idea, honestly. I would probably do the same if I were in his position. I gathered the book and my items. Heading to Obi’s early would help with getting Thomas off my mind. Plus, it would give her time to ask questions about my involvement. This would actually be the first time I would be able to honestly say it wasn’t me. I knew I would need to go to his funeral.

The walk was peaceful, and the breeze from the ocean was warm. The distinctive smell of salt was in the air. Salt damage was evident to the area around the village. Barbados had a history of storms, and anyone of any knowledge could look to see where the storms had hit previously. The damage to the trees wasn’t the only proof. My fascination with the surroundings wasn’t just for the article,
