It was a gorgeous day to be outside. Even with the sharp cracks of various weapons being discharged in the field, Dolly found herself having a great time and relaxing.

She laughed when Mariana teased her about being a good shot.

“Are you sure you’ve never done this before?” she asked as she held up a silhouette with two holes in the head.

“No, never,” Dolly said.

“Okay. Well, you obviously have terrific aim but I’ll tell you what they told me when I got my carry permit. You want to go for the body. It’s a larger target and easier to hit. If you actually have to do this for self- protection, you are likely to be nervous and scared. You’ll be shaking and that will throw off your aim. If you go for the chest, you’re more likely to hit your target and whether or not you kill him, at the very least you will have slowed him down.”

Dolly nodded as Mariana explained.

“Okay, set me up. I’ll try again.”

As she aimed for the larger target area, she imagined it was Randall, and her hands shook. She thought she could see his face looking at her and imagined what it would be like to face him, a few yards away, and aim a gun at him.

She stood, still shaking, unable to pull the trigger. She felt Mariana’s warm hands over her own. They steadied her and she stopped shaking.

“Take a deep, slow breath,” Mariana said. “Clear your mind. Focus on the shot and gently squeeze the trigger. You’ve got this.”

Dolly nodded. Mariana stepped back, and she immediately put three holes through the chest of the silhouette at the end of the shooting range.

Mariana smiled. “Good shot,” she said.
