After a quick shower, they lay together naked on Northaniel’s bed.

They said nothing for some time. Instead, they listened to each other breathing, their chests rising and falling in time to each other’s.

Finally, Northaniel spoke. “Does Bartley know you’re gone?”

Kendrick jerked as if slapped. “How do you know about Bartley?”

Northaniel chuckled. “You think that the rest of us didn’t hear what happened over Halloween? You’re not the only immortal in town, you know.” Northaniel leaned over and kissed him.

“You heard what I did?” he asked softly.

“Yes.” Northaniel nodded. “I did. I never expected to meet you. I thought you were a myth. A shadow demon, a real live shadow demon. I had to see you for myself, to touch you.”

“Was this a game to you?”

“Far from it. This was something else entirely.”

Northaniel ran his fingers up and down Kendrick’s chest, tweaked Kendrick’s right nipple, making Kendrick gasp. “I wanted,” Northaniel said, “to show you that not all immortals mean you harm. That not all immortals wish to keep you chained up. Although, being chained up would have it’s…advantages.”

“What do you mean?” Kendrick asked.

“I know that Bartley keeps you locked in a room, shackled in chains. That’s not a good life for any immortal. But for you to survive as long as you have is a miracle. I wanted you to see that not all immortals are afraid of shadows. But Bartley is afraid of you. That’s why he keeps you chained.”

“Afraid of me?”

“Of his heart. Of what he feels when he looks at you.” Northaniel placed his hand on Kendrick’s heart, and Kendrick knew he could feel it beating beneath the skin. “Your heart already belongs to him.”

“You’re crazy,” Kendrick spat out.

Northaniel smiled. “Am I? I don’t think so. I don’t think I am. You try and tell me I’m wrong.”

“You’re wrong.”

Northaniel chuckled. “Nice try. I still don’t believe you.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“I loved someone long ago,” Northaniel said softly. “Love him still, though he is lost to me. We cannot help who we love.”

“What’s his name?”

“I know him as someone else. But you know him as Willowby.”

“Willowby? Crushing’s puppet?”

“The very same.”

There was silence between them for a moment longer, and then Northaniel spoke again. “We can’t help who we love. You know what they say. You can weave your own story, but you can’t heal your own heart. Someone else has to do that for you.”

Kendrick thought of Bartley.
