Chapter 20

Gam eyed me with concern. “Margaret, what’s happened?” She scooted to the side of the blanket to make room for me. “Sit. You look flushed.”

I gladly followed her recommendation and lowered myself onto the blanket. Jill moved the umbrella as I sat, and repositioned it so that it completely shaded me. I took a sip from the Gatorade bottle and rested it on the blanket.

“Gam’s right. You don’t look so good.” Jill grabbed a water bottle from her bag and handed it to me.

“I’m okay.” I told them, taking the water that Jill offered and holding the cool bottle to my forehead. When I explained what happened, they both insisted that I should head back to the house. I refused, giving them the same pitch I gave Greg.

Gam moved closer to me. She placed one hand on my heart and wrapped the other around my neck. “I’m going to do some work on you.” She closed her eyes. Usually when she placed her hands on me they radiated heat. This time they felt cool to the touch, like ice.

“Doing work on you doesn’t mean that you’re off the hook, though.” Gam’s doe-like brown eyes widened. “You have personal responsibility when it comes to your self-care.”

“I know.”

“Do you?” Gam’s head tilted to the side. “It seems like some of your choices haven’t been aligned with your highest and best.”

“You’re right.” I sighed and twisted the cap off the water bottle. “It’s just that I’m really committed to doing a good job for Northwest Extreme. You both know that I made some mistakes early on, and I guess I’m pushing too hard because I really like this job and I want to prove to myself and everyone else that I can do it—that I can do it well.”

Gam nodded. “I understand, but can I offer one reminder?”

“Please.”

She smiled and then she looked past me. Her eyes glazed over for a moment. She held up one finger and bobbed her head. Returning her focus to us, she turned to Jill. “They’re telling me this is for you, too.”

Jill seemed taken aback.

“They’re reminding you to stay open and in the flow. When we try and force an idea or agenda it creates a kink in the energy.” To demonstrate this, she held both of her arms in a V-shape over her head. “The energy flows into us like a funnel.” She pulled her hands together over her head and ran them down her body.

I could almost see the energy in her graceful, intentional movement.

“When we try to force or push something”—she paused and punched the air with her fist—”we create resistance.” Her hands twisted together, like she was ringing out a wet dishtowel. “If we can relax and concentrate on being present in this moment, then the energy can flow.”

“That makes sense,” Jill said.

“It does, doesn’t it?” Gam smiled.

“Yeah, but how do you do it?” I asked. “That’s my challenge. I get it. I want to stay in the flow, but usually I end up forcing everything.
