“Stop fidgeting. I’m reading and you’re distracting me.” I tap my pencil on the desk as Ajax glares at me from across the room. We’ve been on a roll since I came back from lunch, despite his attempts to strap on his matchmaker’s apron and get to work on our weekend strategy. When I bring pencil to paper, he scoots to the edge of his seat.

“What? What’s wrong? You don’t like it?” He whines, peels off his blazer and throws it towards the sofa.

“There’s an extra comma. Stop it. I’m almost finished.” I hold my hand up and turn my chair to face the wall. His thick glasses are magnifying his blue eyes to twice their size and make it impossible for me to concentrate.

“Tabby!” He barks and stands to cross the room.

“Okay! Goddammit! I’m done. It’s good. Fantastic. I like what you’ve done with Veronica’s rant.” I point to the section of dialogue on the third page of edits and his face beams.

“You mean it? I was hoping you noticed that. I thought it might be too subtle.” He squats on the floor next to me.

“No, it was subtle, but I see where you were going. The sarcasm and irony come through. That’s difficult to pull off.” I push him over and he lands on his ass.

He laughs and folds his legs in a crossed position. “Hey, why don’t you get out of that thing with Byron tonight? Tell him we’re leaving early. Tell him we want to take a day to relax before we begin working. That’ll get his wheels turning and speed up my plan. I’ll bet money he tries to stop you.” He wags his eyebrows.

I lean back in my chair. “No, I was vague about my mystery man. He only guesses it’s you. He’s not certain. This might blow up in my face and when the dust settles, he’ll give me shit about working with you.” I sigh.

He jumps to his feet in a squatted position, then shoots straight up. “No way, Devine. You better promise me you won’t dump me because that meddling jerk comes between us. He’s done this too many times. I can’t believe you let him get away with it.”

I narrow my eyes and stare at him dumfounded. “We’re not a couple. We’re only pretending. Get a hold of yourself for Pete’s sake.”

He paces and searches the room for his jacket. “I’m making an executive decision. Skip his happy hour. I’m sweeping you away early. Text him and say you’re sorry. It’s not like it’s his Christmas party. He should understand we want to get a start on a little afternoon delight.” He smirks, winks and thrusts his hips salaciously.

I shoot my pencil and aim for his crotch. “Stop that, you weirdo. I swear, after we’re done with me, we’ll find you a woman.”

He waves his hands. “No, I’m taking a break. You satisfy my need for female companionship for the time being. My hand covers the rest.” He chuckles and grabs his bag.
