Chapter 5

When Molly woke up the next morning, Evan was already in her kitchen, fully dressed in a new suit and tie.

“I hope you don’t mind,” he said. “I had my assistant drop them off.”

“No, that’s fine,” Molly said. “I wouldn’t have wanted you to have to leave in a toga.”

Evan laughed. “I made coffee,” he said. “Would you like some?”

“Thank you,” Molly said. “I would love some.”

Evan opened one of the cabinets and pulled out a mug as if he knew the place well. Molly blushed at the thought of him going through all of her disorganized cabinets trying to find the coffee beans. “Cream or sugar?” he asked. Molly waved a hand. He poured the coffee into her cup and handed it to her. “It took me forever to figure out what to do with the beans,” he said. “I was looking around for a mortar and pestle before I figured out what that thing was.” He pointed towards her coffee grinder, which was plugged into the wall, right next to the French press.

“You mean the fancy schmancy CEO doesn’t drink freshly ground coffee?” she asked.

“The fancy schmancy CEO has people who bring him freshly ground coffee,” Evan said.

“Of course he does,” Molly said, rolling her eyes. She took a sip of the coffee. Despite not knowing what to do with whole coffee beans, Evan did seem to understand the French press. The coffee was strong, bringing Molly back to the waking world sip by sip.

As she started to wake up, she realized that she hadn’t done anything to pull herself together before coming out in the morning. She was still in her pajamas—an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants—and she hadn’t brushed her hair. With the events of the night before, she hadn’t even taken off her makeup before going to sleep. She must have been quite a sight, but Evan hadn’t commented on it.

“I blocked up your window as best as I could,” Evan said. “I would get it fixed for real as soon as you can though.”

“Thank you,” Molly said. “You certainly didn’t have to do that.”

“It was no problem at all,” Evan said.

Molly looked at him. Seeing him like this, it was hard to imagine him as a bear in the middle of her living room. Even thinking it made her feel so silly. Maybe she had just dreamed it. Maybe he had defended her last night like a normal Navy Seal would and the whole bear thing was something her terrified brain had added to the experience. But he was wearing new clothes, and the toga sheet was folded up on the arm of her couch.

“How are you feeling?” Evan asked. “Are you going to be okay alone?”

“Yeah,” Molly said. “Yeah, I think I’ll be fine. Look, this might sound really stupid but I’ve got to ask… Did you turn into a bear last night?”

Evan laughed. “I did,” he said. “I don’t do that on all first dates, you know. That was a unique experience. You’re very lucky.
