Chapter Ten

The drive had passed in relative silence. Under the cover of dark, most of the roads lying empty in the dead of night. Artemis had tried to hold her tongue as Forester guided them towards Ross Dawkins' home, but as they turned off a main road onto a side street, she couldn't help but break the uncomfortable silence.

“What the hell was that?”

“Hmm? A house. Not his—Ross's is that big one... Oh, wait, nope. Two more streets.”

Artemis glared at Forester's lumpy ear. She resisted the urge to flick it. “You're not funny. And you're not clever. Why did you treat Jamie like that? He's my friend. He was helping!”

Forester pulled the car suddenly to the side of the road, turned off the engine, locked the doors and looked at her.

“What?” she snapped.

He said, “Oh, nothing. Just thought I was risking my career, my life, everything for you. You know. No big deal. But I said some mean words to poor little Jamie Kramer and suddenly I'm the big bad wolf. Which I guess makes you Little Red Riding Hood. I'll make sure to keep an eye out if I ever see you with granny's shotgun.”

“What? You know what, never mind. Forester, I appreciate you helping. Now keep driving.”

“Which is it, Checkers?” he said, eyes hooded again, head leaning back casually, fingers drumming the steering wheel. “You wanna talk about our feelings, or do you want me to save your ass?”

“How about, for a start, you stop commenting on my ass.”

Forester glanced at her, again flashing something lupine in his gaze. “I'm not a tame puppy, Artemis. But you know that. That's why you were gonna call me. It's why your brother did call me. You don't need a tame puppy for this. So how about you stop worrying about the big ol' beast peeing on the carpet or ripping a couple of throw pillows, and focus on the fact that he ripped the neck out of an intruder while little Spud trembled in his kennel.”

“I—what? Spud? Forester, this might be a difficult concept for you to grasp. But let me try—and I'll speak slow, with small words to help. Does that sound alright?”

“Smart lady say what?”

“You can do more than one thing at the same time. Shocker, I know. For one, you can help. Which I appreciate. But, hold on, here's the complicated part,” she said, making no attempt to keep the sting from her voice. “You can also not be a piece of shit to my boyfriend.”

“Ha! Boyfriend? Is that it?”

Artemis felt her cheeks flush at this. Quickly, to cover for her sudden embarrassment, she said, “Another example of being able to do two things is talking and driving. So how about you start the engine and let's go to Dawkins'.”

To her surprise, Forester complied. He started the car, pulled away from the curb and began moving slowly back towards Ross' house. As he did, they passed larger and larger mansions, crowded together on small quarter-acres. Sprawling patios and decks competed with one another for dominance.
