CHAPTER 5

Sometime during the night, Joel had returned to their room and slipped back into bed beside her. Mandy woke up with his arm around her, her head lying on his chest. She sat up and stared at him. One of his eyes cautiously inched open enough to look at her.

“Good morning. I couldn’t keep away.”

She smiled and rested her head on his chest once more. “I’m glad. I’m sorry for going off on one…”

He silenced her, first with his finger and then his lips. When he pulled away, they were both breathless. “Please, love, we have to get past this, otherwise it’s going to do more harm than good.”

“I know you’re right, it’s just… too difficult for me to comprehend. I still think you should at least ring the police and make them aware of what happened.”

He shook his head. “I can’t. The timing isn’t right. If I admit that I was to blame for the accident, they’ll throw the book at me now.”

“It’ll be a darn sight worse the longer you leave it. Do the right thing, Joel, for me, for the kids, for our marriage.”

“Don’t lay that one at my door. Let me reconsider my position during our time away this week and go from there, okay?”

“Is there a chance you’re genuinely going to change your mind or are you simply saying that to appease me?”

“Of course I’m not. I mean it. I’m going to keep a constant eye on the news and monitor the man’s condition. I promise if it alters during the week, I’ll get on the phone to the police right away and make a full confession.”

“Is that the truth?”

“I swear.”

Mandy tilted her head, and they shared another kiss. “I suppose we’d better get up and start on breakfast.”

“Hey, you need to let someone else do some work around here. You and Connie prepared all the meals together yesterday.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Well, for a start I don’t mind, and for another, I doubt if Tania will be lending a hand anytime soon, considering what could be going on.”

“Yeah, okay, that never occurred to me.” He flung the quilt aside. “I’ll get up and help you.”

“Bloody hell. I need to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.”

He poked his tongue out at her and slipped on his jeans and a tee-shirt. “I’ll grab a shower and put fresh clothes on after we’ve had breakfast.”

“Makes sense. I’ll do the same.”

After dressing, they crept along the landing and down the stairs. They were the first to surface that morning.

“What are we going to do for breakfast?” Joel asked.

“We’ll get everything prepared. There won’t be much point in us cooking it, not yet, not until everyone is up. I’ll get the eggs scrambled, that’ll be better than fried eggs.”

“I’ll get the bacon and sausages on the grill pan, or would you prefer cooking them on the hob instead?”

“No, the grill will mean they’re less greasy. Have you checked the forecast for today? If the sea is going to be rough, not sure how long it will take us to reach it before we leave the estuary.
