“Woah now! This is a massive assignment. There’s no way I’m ready for something like this!” I was in disbelief. Breaking into Thad’s house and taking something from his dad’s study was one thing. But this. A Diamond, rare, with its own name, during a party?

“Mr. Fox, things are not always going to be easy. If you don’t like it, you can go back to public school somewhere and be a petty thief. Umbrae Noctis is made up of the best, and that is what we strive for, and what we in turn mold our young members into. We are always willing to help, but turning down a quest without a foolproof reason is not allowed.” Mr. Nicholas stared at me, and for the first time, I felt the power that this mid-50’s level man held. I could only imagine what he was capable of.

“Mr. Nicholas, I… I understand. It was just a lot to take in, especially just getting back from home.”

“Apologies, Mr. Fox. I fear that I forget that you were one of the more inexperienced ones who came here. Go over your Closer Look quest with your team, and work on the details for the next one. More importantly, get to know each other. Well. You will need to work as a well-oiled machine, a singular functioning body, in order to be successful. They are likely to be your team for the remainder of your career. Getting in sync and being able to react, while on the same page, could be the make or break factor during an assignment.” He paused, looking back at his desk. I glanced down and saw a list of locations, items, and people. Before I could obtain any more information, he continued on.

“The event is not supposed to happen for a couple of months. Luckily for us, it falls during the week of Spring Break. You and your team will be able to head to Indianapolis during this time, without having to worry about being deemed absent from school. As for your homes, you can let them know you will be staying at school during the break. It’s a legitimate option we provide to students during that time, so no one will notice one way or the other if you are not where you are supposed to be.”

“Is there any other information that you have for me? A place we can stay there, or certain people we should be looking out for?”

“This will be up to you and your team. Mr. Franklin is putting together relevant information and has likely already started scouting for you. I would suggest you start talking with him.” When Mr. Nicholas looked back down at his desk, I had a feeling that he was done with the conversation, and wouldn’t be looking back up. I took that as my invitation to leave.

At least I had a good goal for the first week back. I managed 16 years without playing team sports. I’m not sure if this qualified, but it was time to get to know my teammates better.
