Chapter Eight

“Can I help you with anything?”

“No, I’m just gathering a few necessary things.” She scooped a collection of crystals from her nightstand, carefully nestling them inside a wooden box. “I should be ready in a couple of minutes.”

Arthur consigned himself to the armchair below the window, watching as Morgan packed things into a carry-on-sized knapsack. The walk along the river to the castle’s Folly and dinner in the Great Hall had done a world of good in improving Morgan’s mood. The way she’d held his hand and rested her head on his shoulder had improved his.

Her ability to bounce back so completely amazed him. Would he be able to laugh at lame jokes as she had over dinner or hum offkey as he packed, as she was doing now? Or would he still be curled in a ball on the bed, cursing his fate, furious with the world?

He snorted. More likely he’d be down at the Boar and Knight, drinking his way through their supply of gin.

“Are you laughing at my ball gown?”

Her what? He caught a flash of red fabric spilling out of the closet. “You have a ball gown?”

“Yeah. For the Fire and Ice Ball that happens later in the week.” She pulled it out so that he could see the ruby-red, strapless, and no doubt form-fitting gown that flared at the bottom. “My mother bought it and tickets for me in case your mother is able to heal me and give me a reason to celebrate.”

“Your mother has exquisite taste. I’m sure it will look outstanding on you.” Was she planning to attend alone?

She returned the gown to the closet, then closed the door with a decisive click. “Because things were going so well, I was going to ask you after today’s session if you would be interested in going to the ball with me. And maybe staying for breakfast.”

“Morgan.” He shot to his feet. “You have to know the answer to both is yes.”

“I know. If things were different, I think we might have already acted on this attraction and been well on our way to a wonderful holiday fling with literal magic sparks flying everywhere. This Shadowblight changed everything.”

He stepped closer to her. “Everything?”

“Not everything,” she answered with a rueful smile. “I’m attracted to you. Very attracted. That hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s grown.”

She placed a hand on his chest, right over his wildly pounding heart. “How could I not be attracted to a handsome man with such a giving heart? A man who still has hope when it feels like all hope is lost?”

He reached up to cover her hand with his own. “How could I not be attracted to a woman who is beautiful inside and out? I’ve seen your spirit, seen its Light, seen how you’ve come back from things that would devastate lesser men and women. I have hope because I believe in you. I’m going to fight because you are worth it.”

“Arthur.” She leaned against him. “How’s your shielding?”

“Fully set, as promised.
