CHAPTER SIX

AS HE DROVE HOME, ZACH frowned at the road. Something didn't feel right. He thought back to the conversation he'd had with Jessica in his store. For over a year, she hadn't once dropped by the store to chat or catch up on things. They'd been pretty close before Holly gave up on him. So why now show up at his store to buy clothes for her nieces as a pretext after all this time? Just because she wanted him to check up on Dean? It sounded odd from what he knew about Jessica. She wasn't afraid of confrontation. There was more to this guy then she was willing to talk about. The whole situation sounded too drastic to drag Zach back into Holly's life. But what the hell could it be?

He stepped into the kitchen and looked at the sunglasses on the counter. He hadn't touched them since he'd thrown them there. He glared at them for a full ten seconds. Grunting, he grabbed them and slipped them on his nose.

And waited.

Nothing.

He waited longer.

Still nothing.

Why those visions and nothing else? What was he supposed to make out of that? Both were of Holly... The first vision was of his past and the most painful time in his life when Holly had decided to leave his sorry ass. The second vision was of the future... Did that mean the glasses were trying to warn him of losing her again? Was he supposed to do something differently? How could he warn her from being attacked, when he had nothing to substantiate it?

Was he to live with another regret? This one more painful than the last?

His stomach knotted. He couldn’t screw up this time. He'd already done Holly wrong once.

Zach needed answers, and the only person who might have them was Holly's mother. Talking to her on the phone and getting at the truth wasn't going to work. He needed to see her face, read her expression or body language. She could easily mask her true thoughts behind the shield of a telephone.

It took all of a little over ten minutes to get to Jessica's house. A wind had kicked in, pressing up against his body and flicking his hair from his brow as he stepped out of his SUV and walked up the sidewalk to her house. A film of gray light coated the fading night sky, while a lamp from the living room filtered through the drapes from the front window. At least he wouldn't be waking her up.

He hit his thumb on the doorbell. After a good while when no one stirred on the other side, he rapped on the storm door. “Jessica, its Zach. I need to talk to you.”

After a moment, the porch light flashed on and the storm door protested as Jessica opened it. Brow ruffled, Jessica stared at him with widening eyes, while her normally braided hair hung half out of its clasp. He had a good idea she hadn't been up long.

“What's wrong?” Her voice rose in alarm as she pushed several wayward, gray strands from her brow.
