CHAPTER THREE

Jenna turned off the shower and squeezed the moisture from her hair before stepping out of the tub and grabbing a towel. She rubbed at her face. Thank God it was only Saturday. The idea of going into the office to play accountant was beyond impossible. She’d never be able to face the questions without cracking. For the last hour, she’d been having a crying fit on her bed. She still felt awful, but what could she expect? Hours earlier she’d found Wayne dead in the middle of the road. The grief. God, it hurt. Yes, she’d filed for divorce, and it would probably have been final in a couple of months, but she’d once loved and respected Wayne.

Then there was the guilt. She couldn’t seem to shake that either. She’d wanted Wayne dead, and now he was.

Sighing, she dried herself off quickly and grabbed a tank and a pair of shorts. A hard, long run probably could help. She needed to get out of the four walls of her house and push herself until she was forced not to think. After pulling her hair into a ponytail, she rummaged in her dresser drawers and pulled out a pair of ankle socks. She slipped one on and started on the other when the doorbell rang.

She stilled momentarily, then hopped across the room until she stuffed the rest of her foot into her sock and looked out the bedroom window to the street. A police car was parked right on the street across from her front yard. Shit. The only reason the police were here had to be because of the accident. Jenna’s heart ricocheted inside her chest. Her emotions were too raw to face anyone, never mind the police. She just hoped to God it wasn’t Kyle, but when she opened the door, there he stood. All six-feet-two-inches of him. He was taller, bigger than she remembered. But at the same time, even with his padded bullet-proof vest, he looked in better shape than ever before.

“I take it this isn’t a social visit?” Jenna tried for sarcasm but it sounded flat even to her.

“I’m off duty.” Kyle’s gray eyes remained sober. “You looked pretty shaken up earlier. I wanted to check and make sure you had someone to keep you company tonight. A friend, family member or—”

“I’m fine on my own.”

“You don’t look fine.” Concern darkened his eyes to charcoal. “Can I come in?”

The skin along her spine pebbled with unease. “Ah, sure. But do you really think that’s a good idea?”

“No, not with the possibility of your involvement, but hell, Jenna, I hate the idea of you dealing with Wayne’s death alone. Is there anyone you can call to keep you company?”

“No. Not without really screwing up their schedule.” She moved aside to give Kyle room to step into the foyer. His aftershave drifted toward her. Woodsy but clean. His scent hadn’t changed. Then she got angry at herself for remembering what he smelled like. She shut the door with a hard snap.
