Chapter Four

Varan woke with Matthew snuggled against his chest in an almost fetal position. He had cursed his own weakness the night before, but as he put one arm around Matthew, he reconsidered. Matthew hadn’t pulled away when he came to bed. Had the younger man softened to him? Being gentler and more patient with him had paid off last night, and Varan had come more sweetly than he had in some time. And Matthew hadn’t panicked. He’d accepted what had happened between them. Varan longed to pull Matthew on top of him and let the younger man slide down his cock, but he knew he couldn’t. Matthew was still a virgin in that way, and Varan had given his word.

Not until Matthew wanted him. Longed for him.

Six months was plenty of time, especially given the progress he’d made in only two days. Matthew had much darker desires than even he knew, and with patience Varan could draw them out and make him blossom.

And then what? Varan grew still as the question echoed in his head. What would he do once he’d awakened Matthew’s passion? Discard Matthew the way Darius had discarded Varna and so many others? No. No, he would never do that, could never even think of doing that. Though he might not have to even think about it, as Matthew might grow curious and leave him first. He couldn’t force him to stay beyond six months. If he tried, then Matthew could turn the tables and report him for violating the standards of a keeper.

Matthew whimpered in his sleep and pressed closer, almost clawing at Varan. Drawing back, Varan saw a pained look on his face. When he groaned and gave a pitiful little cry, Varan shook him gently. He jerked awake and began to flail, but Varan held him firmly so he wouldn’t hurt himself. He got a smack across the jaw for his trouble, but the wide-eyed young man calmed after a moment. He closed his eyes and lay back on the pillows as he struggled to catch his breath.

“Bad dream?” Varan asked.

Matthew nodded. “Someone was laughing. It was dark.” He looked over at Varan and frowned. “You’re bleeding.”

Varan wiped at his lip. “It’s nothing.”

A drop of blood could be seen on Matthew’s hand, and he blinked. “I did that when I woke up.”

“Yeah. It was an accident.”

Matthew reached out and touched his lip. “It’s swollen.”

Varan grasped his fingers and kissed them. “Nice that you care.”

Matthew tried to pull away, but Varan held tight. “Stop playing with me. Just be my friend.”

“Friends don’t do what we did last night.”

Matthew sat up and crossed his legs beneath him. “I’m not him. Okay?”

“I know that,” Varan replied quietly.

“But you chose me because I look like him. And you seem bitter.”

“And?” he said, not wanting to confirm or deny that.

“I don’t want you to hurt me to get back at him in some twisted way.”

“I wouldn’t do that. And there’s no getting back at him. He’s dead.”

Matthew folded his hands in his lap.
