Cole
When I tapped on her door, it was nearly noon. I heard her shuffling around inside, then the door opened. She was not happy. But she looked amazing. Her hair was pulled back and smooth. Her long, tropical print skirt billowed in the warm breeze and the midday sun made her plain white blouse nearly blinding to look at.
âI thought you stood me up,â she said, her eyes dark.
âSorry. Overslept. Sunday is usually my goof off day. Habit.â
âItâs okay,â she said finally, but it was clear by her expression that it was far from okay. âYou ready?â
âYep. All setâ
I lead Kelly to the parking lot and opened the door to my beat up Mustang for her, just like a gentleman. To her credit, she didnât say anything about the condition of the car.
The island was so small, I didnât drive very much, so an old beater was all I had ever needed. It had four wheels, and it usually started. That was enough.
The stretch of beach I was taking her to wasnât all that far away. Most times Iâd just walk it, but since it was something like a date, driving seemed more appropriate.
âEverything here looks like a postcard,â Kelly said as we drove.
âIt really does,â I said. âThe first time I set foot on the island, I felt like I had come home.â
Kelly nodded. âI know that feeling.â
We rode in silence for a few minutes, then pulled onto the side of the road near a stand of trees.
âWeâre here,â I said, rushing to the passenger side to open the squeaky door for her. She hesitated getting out of the car.
âIt doesnât look like thereâs anything here.â
âThere are lots of things in the islands that are more than they seem to be,â I said. âTrust me.â
She waited for another moment, like she was considering whether to follow me or make a break for it. Finally, she got out of the car.
âItâll be great, I promise,â I said, taking her hand and leading her towards the trees.
I lead her to a gap between two of the larger trees and onto a small footpath. âJust up here,â I said. After a few more yards, the trees broke up and the path opened onto my favorite spot on the island. As we stepped back into the sunshine, I watched her face to see her reaction.
Kellyâs eyes widened and her mouth fell open. âOh, my God, Cole!â
Thatâs what I was waiting for. It was the same way I felt the first time I stepped onto the sand in that spot. It was a short strip of beach, surrounded by thick trees on three sides and the ocean on the fourth. There werenât too many secrets on Lime Key, but I had never seen another soul on that stretch of sand, and I had come to think of it as my own.
The water lapped at the shore, just a few feet from where I had set up an umbrella and laid out a couple of tablecloths on the sand just an hour before.
