Charles visually inspected the deck, confirming they had privacy. They’d stopped near an open-air swimming pool and fortunately the area was devoid of people. From the muted music in the distance, most of the still-awake passengers likely populated the casino or one of the dance or karaoke bars.

A few strands of her long hair had escaped the messy knot and he wound them around his hand. He knew they were mahogany, dark and rich. Simple strands of brown hair. Nothing more.

Then how was it they seemed to have a life of their own? Winding themselves around his fingers, caressing his wrists—and glowing? A trick of the light. They couldn’t be luminescent. But damn if they didn’t look that way. Like gold from a flaming fire, her hair—as did the rest of her—appeared magical, enticing him back to childhood and long-forgotten dreams.

“Dreams,” he pondered aloud, entranced with the motion of her hair on his wrist, the back of his hand. The breeze surely. “Aurora, I do believe you’re bringing to the surface ones I’d all but abandoned.” Consigned to the Dumpster of life.

“Me?” Her top teeth dug into her bottom lip before her smile broke free. “Really?

I’m exceedingly pleased to hear that. Everyone should have dreams, ones they never forget or lose sight of. Tell me yours?”

He left off staring at her hair and focused on her face. Drinking her into his soul, Charles realized that rather than feeling impatient at the delay, he wanted to stave off that final orgasmic culmination, wanted to prolong and savor every second she’d grant him. “Your eyes. They’re amazing,” he murmured then confessed, “When I was a boy, my favorite aunt gave me a board game. It was full of princes and castles, fire-breathing dragons and damsels in distress.”

“Do I remind you of that because you think I’m distressed?” She seemed disheartened by the idea.

“The opposite. You make me remember the Wee Folk, the Toadstool Dwellers, the whimsical flying fairies I always wanted to quest with.”

Her brow burrowed. “Quest with? I’m unsure of your intended meaning.” She flashed him a smile to rival Sirius, the brightest star beyond the Sun. “But I love how it sounds. Tell me more?”

“The game had Quests and Triumphs. Each Prince chose a helper, a partner.”

Mystified at how clearly the decades-old memories flooded in, Charles disentangled his hand and stepped away, toward the railing where he firmly anchored both. Though his fingers clenched cold metal, it didn’t stall the thrumming up his arms from the odd fire her hair possessed. Am I losing my mind? His gaze shot to the slight woman beside him, waiting expectantly. Or finding my sanity?

She leaned against his shoulder and sighed. “Your voice is like smoke on velvet.

You give me shivers, Charlie.”

He chuckled in awe. “All those stupid years and wasted dollars on cartons of cigarettes to the rescue.”

His one teenage rebellion. Smoked like a steamship for fifteen years. Finally stopped when he realized his parents weren’t going to ask
