Chapter 16

A scream woke us the next morning, the sound causing me to fall out of bed and Leo to throw himself on the floor, his red-rimmed eyes alert.

Doors slammed in the hallway.

“What the hell?” Pearl cried before adding, “Stay here, Janey! You hear me!”

A strangled cry filled the air. A man’s bellow followed.

Leo staggered to my window, his palms digging into his eyes.

Looking out, he hissed, “Oh, fuck!”

Running for my bedroom door, he threw it open and disappeared.

I glanced out the window.

Below, in the driveway next door, a tall, middle-aged man with a thick waist and claw marks down the side of his face held Juliet by the throat. He was screaming, but the only words I caught were “bitch” and “whore”.

Up and down the street, doors opened.

My feet followed Leo’s lead, my thudding heart thumping with each step as I pounded my way downstairs.

Mom stood next to the door, a robe pulled tight around her, speaking in hushed, frantic tones to Leo.

Whatever she said, he didn’t heed.

Throwing the front door open, he rushed outside, his bare feet stomping over damp grass, the early morning sun kissing his chest.

I paused next to Mom, braced to join Leo. Her firm hand found my shoulder, holding me back.

Pearl materialized next to us, her cell phone in hand, her fingers clicking the keys. She wasn’t the only one with a phone. Up and down the road, people spoke urgently into cells or landlines.

Juliet’s face was turning red.

“You got a problem, man?” Leo called.

The guy holding Juliet glanced up and sneered, his fingers tightening on her neck. She started to gag.

“You one of her clients, son?” he asked. “Because if you ain’t, this isn’t any of your fucking business!”

Leo circled him, his gaze on Juliet.

“You strangling a woman in broad daylight kind of makes it people’s business,” Leo said.

A door slammed farther down the street, the sound echoing off the houses.

“What the hell?” Harrison Smathers swayed into the road in nothing except a pair of baggy boxers, his beer belly hanging over the waistband. The stomach didn’t take away from his burly stature and tree trunk arms.

Leo winced but didn’t stand down.

The man with Juliet smirked. “She owes me.” He glanced at her. “Don’t you, sweetheart?”

Juliet tore frantically at his arms, her eyes wide with fear.

“Would you just drop the whore and get your ass out of here?” Leo’s dad yelled. “Some of us are trying to sleep.” His gaze passed to his son, and his face tightened. “Why you—”

“Just let her go!” I begged, pulling against Mom’s grip. Juliet looked really desperate.

The man holding her was high. His eyes were red, but not in an ‘I just woke up, cried, or hadn’t slept’ kind of way. It wasn’t even in an ‘I’ve had too much to drink’ kind of way. This was more than that. It was an ‘I took something and it fucked me up’ kind of red.

The man’s head jerked in my direction, and he leered.

The distraction was all Leo needed.
