I had brought my backgammon equipment along to IBM Research, and before I headed home Tesauro and I sat down in the company cafeteria to play. After each roll, I maneuvered my checkers gingerly and haltingly, trying to execute the tactics I had learned from the neural nets that derived from Tesauro’s research. It was daunting to play the man who had built those godlike machines. I muddled through, avoiding blunders—or at least avoiding disaster. Our checker armies quickly disengaged each other, and the game became a simple race—a dice-rolling contest in which one can appeal only to Lady Luck. I rolled well and managed to advance and then bear off most of my checkers quickly, leaving one two spaces away and another three spaces away as the game reached its climax. Tesauro, meanwhile, had two checkers five spaces away and another two four spaces away. It was his turn to roll. Later, I put the position into my computer. It told me I had just over a 90 percent chance of victory.
