Chapter Five

Personal Trials and Family Tragedy

Serena Williams began 2003 on a high note. Her victory in the Australian Open completed the Serena Slam, and the entire tennis world waited to see if she would extend her Grand Slam streak at the French Open in June. Martina Navratilova won six consecutive Grand Slam titles from 1983 through 1984, and Serena was two wins away from matching Navratilovas feat.

Serena ultimately did not match Navratilova’s accomplishment. Her streak ended with the Serena Slam, as she was defeated in the semifinals of the 2003 French Open by Justine Henin-Hardenne. The match was difficult for Serena because she was booed loudly and often by the crowd, and she admitted after the match that it was difficult to play under such hostile conditions.

Justine Henin-Hardenne is shown here shaking hands with Serena after defeating her at the 2003 French Open, ending her winnning streak at four Grand Slam titles.
