When Arabella finally arrived to collect my report, it was deep into the night. I had just managed to fall asleep and woke to find her standing over me. The moonlight shown bright enough to reveal dark streaks of blood smeared across her tunic, and the breeze carried the sour stink of sweat she hadnât bothered to magic away.
It was a look I was familiar with. I panicked at the sight of her and told her about the cambion, managing to keep my head enough that I left out the bit about Gwawr.
Arabella nodded and said, âGood work.â She told me that sheâd follow up with Liam, but first she needed to find a Hand to work some blood magic. Her only question was who had been eliminated from the Conclave so far.
I gave her Iorynâs name. She grimaced and asked who else. I admitted that I hadnât watched the end of Eira and Talieâs match, so I didnât know which of them was out. She thanked me, and then she was gone. She didnât ask about Gwawr or about how Iâd recognized the cambion.
I breathed a sigh of relief and laid back down on my cloak, thinking Iâd get a bit of sleep. But I couldnât. I tossed and turned for the rest of the night, worrying about what or who Arabella had been fighting and who needed healing. Had my warning been too late? Had the demons already attacked?
At the first sign of light on the horizon, I gave up on rest and stood to stretch. Then I started the long walk back to the Conclave to find a safe spot to watch the dayâs matches. Gwawr would be up against Barr, first, while Anwen faced off against whoever won Talie and Eiraâs match.
The decision of which to watch was an easy one. Arabella cared about the favorites, and I cared about Barr and Anwen getting eliminated as quickly as possible. I also didnât want to get caught. Both of the people who knew I was lurking around the Conclave would be in the ring, so I didnât need to worry about them. But Barr could have warned the Elders to keep an eye out for me. So, I needed to be extra careful.
I made my way toward the lake, hoping to attach myself to a large group heading up to the matches. The shoreline was dotted with Fae, dipping into the cold water for a morning rinse. I longed to join them, but that would mean stripping down to bare skin, and that was something I couldnât do without risk of being recognized.
I started to move on when I spotted antlers out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look, and there he was. The cambion was bent at the waist, splashing water on his face, right there in the midst of a hundred or more Fae. I tensed, unsure what to do. I thought Arabella was going to deal with him.
He straightened and shook the water from his hair before turning to walk away from the lake.
