The Female Cat and the Two Cats

Cats are often depicted on stelae. The tomcat represented Ra as the Great Cat but some of these cats are referred to, or depicted, as female cats. It is thought that they represent the Eye of the Sun but it is possible that they are the female form of Ra. The gender of the cats is rarely clear and the grammar is often contradictory. The difference between male and female cats is not easily seen, when it was important to specify a female cat she was shown with visible teats. One depiction of the Great Cat defeating Apophis is definitely a female cat. Possibly it didn’t matter in many contexts or perhaps it is our understanding which is at fault.
