Chapter Six

He needed to run. Davi left bed, stepped into a pair of loose pants then strode out to the hallway where he spotted another man.

“Davi?” The man inched closer to him and grinned. “You clean up nicely.”

He should know this guy. Maybe in his lion form, he’d know the man.

“You’ve been through a lot.” He stuck out his hand. “I’m Nat. I was there when we rescued you.”

“Nat.” Now, he remembered. “I didn’t recognize you without your fur.”

“Want to go for a run. I’ve been dying for one, and Syd’s in a meeting with Markas. We can’t get into trouble if we stay on the property.” Nat nodded to the steps. “Stick together, and we’ll get to stretch.”

Davi wanted to run and stretch. “Sure.” He followed Nat to the first floor and the back of the house.

“Drop your pants here.” Nat shrugged out of his T-shirt and loose pants. He rolled his shoulders then dropped to his hands and knees. Fur covered his back then spread down his limbs. When he tipped his head back, his face shifted into the lion and he growled.

Davi kicked out of his pants and followed suit. He gave in to the animal. Once in his lion form, he stood beside Nat. Being free felt good.

He marveled at the swirling breeze and the waving grass before them. He was free. No guns, no people wanting to hurt him…

He broke into a run and charged ahead of Nat. Soon, he and Nat were zipping across the lawn. Every so often, he tackled Nat then Nat returned the favor. The playing didn’t remind him of Talisman. There wasn’t heat or desire. They tussled for the sake of romping. He trusted Nat, but he preferred Talisman.

Davi stopped and crouched down in the tall strands of grass. He dug his claws into the earth and watched Nat swat at something with his massive paw. He’d heard about pouncing and wanted to try it. Why not now? He kept himself low, and when Nat stopped moving, he lurched forward. He landed on Nat with a grunt.

Something odd caught his attention. A flash. He crouched down on top of Nat and focused on the flash.

The sound of gunfire split the air. He knew that boom and hunkered down tighter on Nat. He wished he and Nat could talk. He’d explain why he was smashing his friend into the ground.

Another gunshot echoed in his ears. Even with his keen hearing, he couldn’t locate the origin of the shots. The hair on his back stood on end and his nerve endings sizzled. Something wasn’t just wrong; it was very wrong. He inched off Nat and huddled beside him. His heart hammered, and the desire to destroy the origin of the booming sound filled his mind.

“There,” someone shouted.

Davi held still, but from his crouched viewpoint, he couldn’t see much. Move? Try to run? Worry filled his brain. He’d never dealt with anything like this. He’d never been trained in defensive maneuvers. All he
