CHAPTER SIX

Sami Archer edged close to Jaris and Sereeta. “Am I confused here or what? I thought this was a party for Jasmine’s eighteenth birthday. But it’s lookin’ like an engagement party for Jaz and that dude from the band. What’s comin’ down here? I’m missing somethin’, gang.”

“He’s coming on strong to Jasmine,” Alonee answered. “I think that’s what he did with Carissa—when her and Kevin split up. I guess that’s Zendon.”

A few other couples began to dance. Marko cut across the room like a madman. He grabbed Zendon’s shoulders, spun him around, and shoved him away from Jasmine. Then Marko dragged Jasmine into his arms and tried to dance with her. But she wasn’t having any of it. “Let go of me, fool!” Jasmine screamed, trying to wriggle out of Marko’s arms. Jasmine and Marko grappled awkwardly in the middle of the room. They made a terrible sight to see.

“I think the food is ready now!” Oliver shouted again. “Let’s all head to the table. Get it while it’s fresh.”

Jaris added his strong baritone voice, “Real good food here. Yep. Good food. Come on! Let’s eat.”

Marko and Jasmine were in a standoff in the middle of the room. “I paid for all this, babe!” he shouted. “What you doin’ to me, girl? You makin’ a fool outta me, you know that? I paid for all this. For that idiot singer who’s carryin’ on like a lovesick donkey!”

“Nobody makin’ a fool of you, Marko Lane,” Jasmine shot back. “You doin’ that all by your own self. And you doin’ a great job, just like you always do. Zendon, he’s a gentleman, which is something you know nothin’ about, dude. You so jealous, you can’t stand someone bein’ nice to me. What’s your problem, boy? Zendon, he’s gonna be a big star pretty soon, and he likes me!”

“He’s an idiot!” Marko screamed. “He’s not gonna be no big star. He’s a little creep who lives over on Grant with all the gang-bangers and the graffiti. He’s trash, girl. He’s garbage!”

“He’s not trash!” Jasmine screamed back. “You the one who’s trash. You’re a trash-talkin’ fool. I don’t know why I bother with you. You’re ruinin’ my whole birthday party, dude, you know that? Look at everybody lookin’ over at us and laughin’. We’re like a sideshow in the circus. Marko, you’re just ruinin’ everything for me—and on my birthday!” Jasmine’s voice dissolved into great sobs.

“I paid for all this!” Marko shouted. “My dad, he give me the money, and we paid for everything. Look how you’re treating me, baby. You are breaking my heart. I done nothin’ but good for you. And the first piece of garbage come along mouthin’ lyin’ sweet talk, you’re sittin’ on his lap, and I’m history. How you think that makes me feel?”

Sami shouted. “Come on, you two, quit your scrappin’ and get some of this good eats. Food lookin’ mighty good. Mmm-mmm, looka them little sandwiches! Don’t they look good? They got liverwurst on them, looks like.
