Chapter 12

SARAH woke up after what felt like two or maybe three hours later. But when she opened her eyes, she found the sun was lighting the room in a way that told her it was not early morning. In her sleep, she had turned to face Madeline’s pack-and-play, so she immediately saw that she was not in it. Sarah shot up from the bed and jumped to her feet. Leaping to the crib, a sheet from the bed caught her ankle and she almost went down. When she leaned down to rid herself of the sheet, she saw Logan laying on his stomach facing Madeline, who was doing the same but on a blanket.

And her wobbly head was lifted in the air.

“Look what I learned to do, Mommy,” Logan spoke with a pride that brought a fast wave of pleasure over her body. Sarah felt her eyes sting and her breathing get shallow. Shit, she was going to cry. She shook her head, no, no she wasn’t.

She breathed in deeply, which unfortunately sounded a lot like a sob. Logan’s head shot up and his worried eyes assessed Sarah as if she were injured. She pretended like she didn’t notice and walked over to them and sank to the floor.

“Oh my goodness, what a big girl!” Sarah said in her sing-song mommy voice.

Logan was still watching her. “What’s wrong?”

Sarah shifted her eyes to Logan. “Nothing.” She smiled at him to convince him.

His eyes narrowed and then he asked, “Are you going to cry every time she does something new?”

She rolled her eyes. He was such a know it all. “No.”

He grinned. “I don’t believe you.”

She rolled her eyes again and turned her attention back to her daughter. Sarah leaned down and smoothed her hand over Madeline, giving her back little rubs. “How long have you been up?”

Logan, too, was back to playing with Madeline, letting her little fist grasp his index finger and give it little waves. “‘Bout an hour.” He continued to watch Madeline.

Sarah all of the sudden began to feel insecure about last night. He was acting like nothing had happened. Maybe he regretted it. He didn’t seem especially happy this morning. But then, considering the situation she had them in, there wasn’t a whole lot to be especially happy about. How was she supposed to act after spending the night in bed with a man she wasn’t in a relationship with? She had never done this. First had been Logan, and Aneli had been the only other one. How did women do this? Was the rest of the day going to be like this? Her wondering what he was thinking? Her wishing he would touch her or reassure her that last night meant to him what it meant to her?

Logan continued to play with Madeline.

Sarah started to get up. “She must be hungry.”

“I already got her.”

She nodded. “What time do we need to head out?”

“In about a half hour.”

“Okay.”

Logan moved from his stomach to sit and glanced over at her.
