Chapter 7
âWell, kitty cat, I guess maybe I should go buy you some real food,â Lucy said the next morning, staring at the kitten still occupying her bathroom. He was sitting on the edge of the tub, staring back. âI canât afford to keep feeding you salmon,â she continued.
The kitten responded by jumping down and coming over to rub on her legs. âOh fine!â Lucy said. âIâll get you a real litter box too. No more newspapers for you. Whoever ends up taking you can have that, too,â she said, bending down to pet the animal.
He responded with a purr, winding around her legs, back and forth. Lucy stroked down the length of his brown-and-black body, smiling to herself when she reached the end of his white-tipped tail. His fur was looking much healthier and shinier, and his eyes seemed brighter too. She straightened up, reaching her arms out and stretching.
âAlright, kitty, Iâll go right now. Thereâs still plenty of time before the restaurant opens.â With that, she cracked open the bathroom door and slipped out, using her foot to keep the kitten in the bathroom. âStay!â she commanded, smiling at his antics. âJust stay right there!â
Free from the kitten, she slipped on her shoes and headed down the stairs. There was a pet store about a mile away from the restaurant, an easy walk on a nice day like today.
Lucy set off, coming to the end of the alley and turning right onto Salem Street, towards downtown and City Hall, the same route she had taken yesterday. As she made her way through the city, she let her mind wander, thinking over Lucasâs threats. Iâm glad to have solved at least part of the puzzle, and cleared Nonnoâs name. Now I just have to work on the rest of it, Lucy thought to herself.
Distracted by her own thoughts as she walked, her mind wandered to Allyâs recent nomination. Itâs such an honor for her. It would be nice if there was some sort of award for running restaurants too, not just cooking in them, she thought, with just a tinge of her earlier jealousy. After college, Ally had the option to go elsewhere, and to see the worldâLucyâs only opportunity had been back to Boston, and Alba.
âOh! Excuse me!â Lucy said she abruptly walked into the back of the person in front of her. âIâm so sorry!â she apologized as the person turned towards her.
âNot at all,â replied a familiar voice. âIt was my fault.â
âCharlie!â Lucy cried. âWhat are you doing here?â she asked in shock.
âRunning errands,â replied the tall police officer who had saved her life a few weeks ago when she nearly drowned in the harbor. âIâm off duty until later tonight,â Charlie explained, using his free hand to push his light brown hair back. His other hand was loaded down with full shopping bags.
âOf course, of course,â Lucy replied nervously. âSame here. Iâm actually going to a pet storeâI have a cat now. Well, heâs not mine, but I have him for nowâ¦â She trailed off.
