“Oh Gemma, I don’t know what to say. I thought I had it bad because I didn’t get to see my dad as much as I wanted. But, what you must have gone through I can’t imagine.” Maddie’s big eyes filled with tears.

“Maddie, it’s okay. I survived.” Gemma’s nervous laugh barely covered her discomfort. She had no idea her cousin would react so strongly to her story.

“No, it is NOT okay. You were just a child and those horrible people — oh, I could — they should —.”

Maddie’s anger was so shocking that Fitzroy started whining and trying to shove his big body over the seats and into her lap.

Gemma shoved and pushed at Fitzroy in an attempt to get him out of their faces. “Maddie calm down. It’s in the past. It’s over and the grandparents are dead. Fitzroy! Get. Off.” She grabbed his front legs and flipped him into the backseat. “Look, we’re both hungry. We need to eat.” She reached out and smoothed Maddie’s thick curly hair. “You’ll feel better when you have a full stomach.”

Maddie’s torso heaved and shuddered. “All right. But, I am never going to forgive them.” She shook her finger as she spoke the last few words.

Gemma chuckled at the temper in her cousin’s little girl voice. “Okay. Now, let’s go eat.”
