Vivian wasn’t much for hard liquor, but sometimes life required a little buzz, and tonight was one of those nights. She lifted the shot glass to her lips and downed the harsh liquid. She swallowed, trying not to gag. “I don’t know how you drink this shit all the time.” She coughed. “I don’t know how my baby brother made this his drink of choice.”

Lilly laughed. “I don’t know how you don’t.” She raised the bottle of tequila.

“One more.” But this time, Vivian would sip, or she’d never make it up the yard and into her house. She set the glass on the table and stared at the moonlight dancing across the lake. A boat hummed along the shoreline, sending its waves crashing into the breakwall. The entire evening had been all about Vivian and Oliver and the murder.

However, Vivian could tell that something was eating at her best friend and had been for the last few weeks. Every single time they’d gotten together, Lilly had put on her best smile and kept all topics of conversation away from anything having to do with her life—unless it was superficial, like what color to paint the living room, or if she should buy a new car, even though hers was only two years old.

Vivian hadn’t pushed because either Ethan was always around, or she’d been hyper-focused on Oliver.

But now that they both had a few drinks under their belts, it was time to find out what the hell was going on with Lilly.

Vivian adjusted her chair so she could see her best friend’s eyes. “I sense some sadness with you. What’s going on?”

“I’ve just been so worried about you, and now that Oliver’s death was—”

“No. You’ve canceled a dozen times on our lunches or girls’ night in the last six months. The only time I see you is if it’s with Ethan. And if I do see you alone by chance, we never talk about anything real unless it has to do with me.” She lifted her glass and took a tiny sip. “I’m not going to let you leave here tonight until you tell me what’s going on with you.”

Lilly tossed her head back, downing a shot. She poured a second one and did the same thing. “You’re going to have to schedule me an Uber, or I’m sleeping here.”

“Either can be arranged,” Vivian said. “But you’ve got to stop stalling.”

Lilly blew out a puff of air. “I haven’t voiced this out loud to anyone. I’ve barely allowed myself to even think it. But I can’t ignore it anymore.”

“Ignore what?”

“I think Ethan is cheating on me.”

“Excuse me?” Vivian bolted upright in her seat. She gripped the sides and leaned forward. “Why do you think that?” Ethan was a lot of things, but he’d always been such an attentive boyfriend and husband. Whenever Lilly needed him, he was there. Or at least that’s how it looked.

“It’s not the first time I’ve wondered if he’s seeing someone.” Lilly dropped her head back and gazed into the sky.
