CHAPTER 16
Twenty minutes later, a slightly bewildered and still very sleepy Ellie followed her aunt out onto the private beach area owned by the Sunset Palms Beach Resort. A young woman in skintight leggings and a pink neon crop top was standing in front of a group of people spread out on the sand. Everyone had a yoga mat unrolled in front of them and Ellie was glad that the resort staff had provided her and her aunt with mats. She gripped it tightly now as they joined the group. She had never done yoga before and in spite of her grumbling to her aunt, she was secretly excited. She had seen photos of people doing morning yoga on beautiful beaches. It always looked so serene and idyllic, and wonderfully relaxing. She had dreamed of being able to join a class like that.
This is going to be amazing, Ellie thought, smiling to herself. She was sure that she was going to be a natural and would flow gracefully into each yoga pose, while achieving the perfect rhythm of Zen breathing.
Aunt Olive had made a beeline for a spot at the front, next to a gray-haired lady who looked vaguely familiar. There was no space next to them for another mat, so Ellie chose a spot at the rear of the group and unrolled her mat on the sand. She was just sitting down cross-legged and trying to place her hands in the lotus position when a shadow fell over her.
âNamaste.â A woman pressed her palms together and bowed to Ellie.
âOh⦠erm⦠hi,â said Ellie, smiling uncertainly at her.
The woman twitched. âSo, like, youâre in my spot.â
âYour spot?â
âYeah, I always have that corner in class.â
âOh.â Ellie looked around at the empty expanse of sand around them. âBut⦠weâre not in a room.â
âThatâs my spot,â the woman insisted. âI need to be there when I practice. Itâs important for the flow of my energy channels. Otherwise Iâll feel totally blocked if Iâm cramped.â
âButâ¦â Ellie looked in puzzlement again at the open beach around them. âCanât you just put your mat here, next to me? Weâve got the whole beach. What difference does a few feet make?â
The womanâs face was turning red. âOf course it makes a difference! That is one of the goals of yogaâto achieve balance and enable the free flow of Zen spirit. Youâre blocking my chi. Youâre preventing me from reaching karmic fulfilment.â
âErm⦠OKâ¦â said Ellie, giving the woman a weird look. She scooted her mat a few feet away.
The woman huffed. âNot there either.â
âWhat? Why not?â asked Ellie impatiently.
The woman gestured to the sun in the sky. âCanât you see? Youâre in the path of the sunâs rays. Youâre shadowing me from its healing warmth!â
Ellie was starting to lose her temper. âThe sun is above our heads now. Iâm not blocking anything.â
âYes, you are! Youâre blocking the energy channels I need to achieve peace in my poses. Especially now when I need it so much.â The womanâs face creased with sorrow.
