ANIMAL HELPERS

Not all members of search and rescue teams are human. Dogs, horses, and even pigeons have all been trained to assist teams. Dogs are perhaps the best-known animal searchers. Civilian volunteers, police officers, and firefighters train them to use their sense of smell to find people lost or trapped.

Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Border Collies and Labrador Retrievers are the most common breeds used for search and rescue missions. They are especially helpful in urban search situations. The dogs can balance on piles of rubble in a collapsed building. They sniff all corners, and when they detect the smell of a person, they bark.
