FOSSIL GRAVEYARDS

One of the most obvious indications of catastrophism is the vast fossil graveyards in the sedimentary rock column, averaging a mile deep all around the globe. The very existence of fossils indicates rapid burial of the organisms, followed by rapid compaction of the sediments encasing them, else they would not have been preserved at all. Yet fossils are found everywhere by the billions. They have provided the supposed chief evidence for evolution, and they are the means by which geologists think they can determine the age of the rock in which they are found.

Fossil fish beds have been found that extend for miles, containing fish by the billions, in many places (Scotland, New York, California, Wyoming, and so on). Nothing like this is being formed today anywhere. Great dinosaur beds have been excavated in New Mexico, Alberta, Tanzania, Belgium, Spitzbergen, and many other places. There are great hippopotamus beds in Sicily, amphibian beds in Texas, mastodons in Florida, horse beds in France, and, of course, beds of shells and other remains of marine invertebrates found practically everywhere. Fossils of insects abound in Colorado, the Baltic nations, the Caribbean islands, and elsewhere. The vast coal beds are simply fossilized remains of plants.

Then, there are the amazing elephant (or “mammoth”) beds of Siberia and Alaska. Literally millions of these huge animals have been entombed in the permafrost soils of the Arctic, occasionally even with the flesh still intact. Also in the permafrost have been found the fossils of many other great mammals—the rhinoceros, camel, horse, and more. All these animals are now found in a region that would be utterly incapable of supporting them today. When they were suddenly buried by fast-moving sediments, they were evidently then living in a warm environment with abundant vegetation. The sudden flood that engulfed and buried them was evidently followed by a rapid change in climate, the temperature in some exposed areas dropping so quickly that certain animals were frozen whole before their flesh could decay. Within months or years, all the soil water likewise had frozen, and the “permafrost” has preserved the fossils of these millions of large animals ever since. Whether these animals were buried by the Noahic flood or by a later regional flood is open to further study, but there is no question that they are evidence for extensive catastrophism.

These Arctic fossils illustrate a remarkable fact evident also in many other geologic data. At one time in earth history there was a worldwide temperate climate. The remains of coral reefs formed by sea creatures that can live only in warm waters have been found so far north that they may underlie the very poles themselves. Coal beds and tropical fossil animals have been found in Antarctica also. Tropical animals have also been found as fossils in Greenland, Spitzbergen, and in practically every other region of the world. Fossil ferns and other tropical and temperate-zone plants have also been found in abundance in the polar regions. Uniformitarian geologists have never been able
