CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: SCAR

I hear Danny’s sniffles as we walk down the hall to the infirmary. The man reminds me of a child. Albeit, a large child. I waver between being pissed off and sad that he’s in this mess. He’s lucky we realized he wasn’t a genuine threat before one of us killed him. Puma could easily have broken the man’s neck instead of just his hand.

“You know, holding a knife to Kingsley’s throat was wrong?” I ask Danny as I take x-rays of his hand. “Even though the knife was fake. You could have hurt her.”

Danny sniffles and nods. “I just wanted to help.”

“Was it your idea to threaten Kingsley?” I ask him.

“No. Juan said I had to do it that way. He said it was the only way to get your club’s attention. That you guys wouldn’t take me seriously if I just walked up and asked for the woman. He said you’d all laugh at me.”

“Jesus.” I whisper as I study the x-rays. “You’re lucky we didn’t kill you.”

“Are you going to kill me?” He whispers, his eyes wide with fear.

“No. I’m going to set your hand because you have a few broken bones. Then we’ll get you something to eat and you can rest.” I tell him. I study him and I realize he may look like a grown man, but his face still has some youthful pudge. “Danny, how old are you?”

“Thirteen.” He says and I groan. Puma is going to kick himself for hurting a kid, even though he looks to be in twenties.

“Danny, do you have a family?” I ask him, but I can tell by his clothes and the smell of his unwashed body that he’s likely on his own.

“I used to have a sister, but they took her away.” Danny says, watching as I prepare his cast.

“Who took her away?” I ask.

“Her boyfriend, Max. Mean Max and his friend Thad. We lived with Max for a while, but then he said she has to earn her keep and he took her away. He kicked me out of the apartment.”

I freeze when he mentions Max and Thad. It couldn’t be the same guys from Leather & Lace. Could it? But then how many assholes named Max and Thad could there be in San Diego? “Do you know where they took your sister?” I ask him.

“To their club. She didn’t want to go. She cried and begged, but then he hit her.” Danny sobs. “I tried to stop them, but they hurt me.”

Well shit. “Ok, Danny. Your cast is in place. Why don’t you lie on the bed?” I look up as Nox comes into the room carrying a plate of food. He places it over Danny’s lap. I hand Nox a pill. “He can take this after he has something in his stomach.” Nox nods and takes a seat in the recliner near Danny’s bed. I leave Nox to watch over Danny while I head to Church.

Passing through the common room, I spy a group of bikers wearing the Vegas chapter cut.
