“What?” I asked, as if I hadn't heard.

Dr. Godwin was behind me, smiling.

“You were supposed to be married, but you decided to enter the seminary instead,” Evan clarified.

“Oh, well, there’s no huge secret there.”

Not like the dozen other secrets I was trying my damnedest not to share. And now Dr. God knew, too, which was not ideal, but someone would have told him eventually.

“Why did you say supposed to marry?”

Maggie noticed everything.

Father Evan looked embarrassed.

“I’m sorry. I sometimes have thoughts I say out loud. I’m trying to get better about filtering what I say.”

He was like the anti-Kate. Kate had no filter because, I’d been told, she was working on sharing what she had once kept hidden. Meanwhile, Evan had no filter by default. When Evan looked at me, I wanted to throttle him. He knew everything, didn’t he? I tried to telepathically tell him to shut the fuck up and, to his credit, he looked down at the floor and went into the next bedroom.

“I think this bedroom in the middle seems like the best one,” Father Evan said.

Smart choice. This bedroom connected directly to the bathroom, too, so I’d used that bedroom myself until I moved to the first floor so I could turn down the upstairs heater to save money.

“It’ll be nice to not have to live alone anymore, won’t it, Father?” Maggie said.

I could do with a night alone with her, but we couldn’t have everything, could we?

“Nicer or safer?” Father Evan asked.

Dr. God chuckled.

Goddamn it, Evan.
