Raven didn’t feel any better about her options the next morning, although a regular day on base of drill exercises and training with new flight maneuvers managed to take her mind off the looming decision she still had to make.

Primus Kauler had already notified Keegan Borigga that he would take over in her stead once she and her team embarked from Havendom with the prisoners and their escort. She was more than happy to hand over the mantel of drill instructor to an equally qualified STAR legionary for the next five days.

Keegan surprised all of them by coming up with two new wing formations that allowed the dragons in each separate wing unit to both provide cover from ground fire and combine their attacks for maximum destruction.

When the first designated wing unit ran the drill, the effects were immediately clear and startling.

This was mostly because two legionaries waiting on the ground to watch the first experimental maneuver in action were almost swept up in the combined attack, which was far more powerful than anyone had expected except Keegan.

The pillar of swirling firebreath that struck the ground—encased in a hard, dagger-like shell from the mounts with dragonfrost who’d attacked at the same time—cut a massive furrow across the training field as the formation moved through the sky. Chunks of flaming grass and ice-encrusted earth exploded in all directions, and the two legionaries who’d happened to be standing in the line of fire leapt onto their mounts and barely escaped being consumed by a violent cyclone of combined dragon power raging toward them.

No one had to give the command for the wing unit running the drill to stop immediately and touch down. For a good ten seconds after the formation landed, everyone stared at the giant gouge in the training field—and it wasn’t only the First Cohort distracted by the effects.

The entire training field had grown incredibly silent as every division assigned to training that day stared at the devastation wrought by the new attack strategy. Ice cracked and crunched along the grass. Multiple columns of thick black smoke billowed from the scorched earth where the ice-hardened firebreath had dug into the ground like a giant red-hot blade.

Then, someone from the Third pumped a fist in the air and shouted across the training field, “For the Legion!”

Laughter exploded everywhere and the cry was answered by hundreds of legionaries across every division as they celebrated the discovery of such enormous firepower on display. The STAR division joined them, and Raven was swept up in the surprised elation at what the First Cohort had accomplished with the first run of Keegan’s newest tactic.

Despite having a preconceived idea of what the attack would do, Keegan looked shellshocked by the devastation his unit’s combined dragon attack had wrought on the training field.

The rest of the division didn’t seem to notice or they didn’t care.

They crowded around Legionary Borigga—who’d led the wing unit in
