Chapter 9
Getting to Bethâs apartment complex didnât take long. Walking from one end of the huge campus to the other took about half an hour. Michaelâs apartment off campus was actually closer to some of my classes than my dorm was. She and most of the schoolâs other athletes lived in some of the best apartments on campus. The school newspaper had pointed out more than once since Iâd started that it said a lot about where the administrationâs priorities were.
Once I got there, though, finding the exact building was harder than Iâd thought itâd be, especially in the dark. Luckily for me, there were plenty of people out past ten oâclock at night on a Friday. Two very helpful (and very drunk) girls offered to walk me exactly where I needed to go, insisting that it wasnât safe for me to be walking by myself at night. I agreed with their logic. I had made sure to only walk on lighted paths with other people around and be aware of my surroundings on my way over. But the way they stumbled and slurred their words lessened the power of their message just a bit.
After saying thanks, reassuring the girls that I was going to be fine, and accepting the two quick hugs that my new friends insisted on giving me, I found myself standing outside of Bethâs building. I didnât call her to tell her I was there, though. I just stood there.
The weird thing was that I didnât want to run away or cancel. But I didnât want to go up there, either. So instead I sat down on one of the steps in front of the building. There wasnât much to look at. Occasionally a group of students would pass by, their laughter and loud voices a clue that they were coming from or going to a party or one of the bars in town. A couple of people who walked past were stumbling for different reasons, if the big backpacks and sleep-deprived looks on their faces were anything to go by. Not everyone had the luxury of putting their schoolwork aside for a bit of weekend fun.
When the door to the building behind me opened, I didnât turn around to see who had come out. But when that person sat down next to me, it was hard to ignore. I honestly wasnât surprised to see Beth there. At that point, it wouldnât have surprised me to see Beth pop out from under my bed one night to say hi.
If the universe was sending me a signal, then I was getting it loud and clear.
âSo, howâs it going?â she casually said, as if I wasnât acting like someone who had no idea how to interact with other humans. Again.
Trying to match her breezy delivery, I responded with, âNot bad. Ran into Alma tonight.â
âI know. She texted me. Sorry about that. Iâm not sure what she said to you, but I feel confident that I should apologize for her anyway.
