TWENTY-EIGHT
His entire shift he kept screwing things up because his mind wasnât on the job like it should be, and he knew why. All he could think about was the girl; the look on her face had been priceless. It was as if sheâd known that it would end like this. There had been the wide-eyed look of fear but also a look of resignation that had drawn him in deep.
âJesus Christ, you dipstick, will you pay attention? Thatâs twice youâve almost scalded me.â
He jerked his hand back from the huge vat and glared at Miranda. âSorry.â
âWhat the hell is wrong with you today?â she shouted over the racket of the machinery. âYou should see if you can clock off, youâre not much good to anyone and I donât want to die of third-degree burns. Itâs a painful way to go.â
He stared at her but gave her a half smile as if he was apologising, which he wasnât. Heâd have quite liked to see her skin peeling from her body, but she had given him an idea. He knew the cops would be on the lookout for him, they would be on high alert, which they bloody well should be. He knew what he did was bad, he knew that, but he didnât care. It had been the most thrilling thing, apart from sex with the slut in the office who wore tiny crop tops and shorts so short you could see the outline of her arse. Heâd had her in the stationery cupboard at the Christmas party. It had been hot, sweaty, and fast â but it had been awesome. She was wild, she had also been drunk and had never even acknowledged him the next day; he didnât think she remembered their intimacy at all. She probably took half of the office staff in there that night. He wouldnât complain about it though because it had been good, and he lived in hope that one day she might feel horny enough to drag him back in there for a second time.
He knew they met, had some kind of support group, his final girls, which was how he fondly called them. He had hung around that church often enough; he quite liked the peace and serenity it offered him and the opportunity to see them coming and going. He knew he could have done something much sooner, but heâd wanted it to be dramatic, impactful, and scare the shit out of the girls. Sending them in a spiralling panic that they might stop paying attention to what they were doing and let things slip. Heâd watched them long enough to know that they were good, cautiously good at taking care of themselves and each other.
Now he had an idea, thanks to Miranda. It could either pay off spectacularly or be a complete disaster, but he was willing to take that chance.
He heard his name being called by Gary, his supervisor, and he sighed; he was as much of a dick as Miranda.
