It was almost nine-thirty when we arrived at the PD. We went straight up to my office where I called Alice Booker.

“Mrs. Booker. How are you this morning? Good. Do you have a minute? I have a couple of things I need to clear up. Good, thank you. Alice, I think you told me that Jennifer was John Lewis’ first wife. Is that correct?”

“Yes, that’s right. Why do you ask? Oh my god; he’s been married before.”

“That’s what our research has turned up. It looks like he was married back in 1982, to someone named Sapphire Williams. Have you ever heard that name before?”

“No. This is the first time I’ve heard it. I—I don’t know what to say... Lieutenant Gazzara, that was more than thirty years ago. He must have still been a kid.”

“Thirty-three years ago, to be precise and, yes, he was nineteen at the time. Apparently, the marriage didn’t last long, just a few months—”

“Where is she, this Williams woman? I want to talk to her,” she interrupted me.

“We’re still working on that. In the meantime, I’ll talk to John Lewis myself. Is there anything more you can tell me about him that I should know before I do?”

She thought for a few minutes, then said, “We never liked him much. He was very quiet. Not talkative at all. There was just something odd about him. He told us that he was an only child and that his mother and father had been killed in an accident—never would talk about that—and that he’d been raised by his grandparents. But they had both passed several years ago, and he had no other family. And he also told us he’d never been married before. That’s all I know, I’m afraid. Oh my God, that sounds so ridiculous. He was married to my sister for four years, but I know nothing about him.” I heard her sob.

“Well, if that’s what he told you, he was certainly lying. He was raised by his grandparents, but he was married before, at least once, that we know of, and he also has a brother, Michael. We’re still trying to track him down too... No, Alice, it’s still early days yet... No, I don’t know any more than I’ve told you... Thank you... Okay, that’s good... So, look, if you don’t have anything else, I need to let you go... Yes... Yes, of course. As soon as I know something, I’ll be in touch. In the meantime, if I have questions, I’ll call you. Thank you, Alice.”

I stared at the screen of my iPhone for several seconds after she’d disconnected. John Lewis, I now knew, was indeed a liar, but was he also something else? Was he a killer?

I shook my head, looked at Lonnie, and said, “It’s time we talked to Finkle.”

He smiled, nodded, and slowly got to his feet. “You sure you’re ready for that?”

“Oh yes, as ready as I’ll ever be.” And I was; I was also looking forward to the impending confrontation with some trepidation and a whole lot of excitement, which I hoped didn’t show.
